History of the Club
Fort Miami Women’s Rugby has a rich history that began in 2006, when a small group of players from Coconut Grove, Miami, joined forces with a women’s team from Naples. The team initially met for occasional games, but by 2007, as interest grew in Miami, the team rebranded as "Naples/Coconut Grove Women’s Rugby" to reflect its shift in focus. The team practiced at Peacock Park in Coconut Grove and bonded over social gatherings at the Sandbar, developing a close-knit community of players.
By 2008, the team became "Miami Women’s Rugby," as more players from various parts of the city joined. In search of better resources, the team decided to partner with the Miami Men’s Rugby Club, which allowed them access to better facilities, equipment, and infrastructure. This partnership proved beneficial as the team grew stronger, eventually leading to the merger with Fort Lauderdale Women’s Rugby in 2010. The combined team, known as Fort Miami, allowed for more consistent practices and better opportunities to compete at a higher level.
Founded in 2010, Fort Miami Women’s Rugby quickly established a legacy of success and resilience within Division 2 USA Rugby. The team’s dedication to hard work and player development resulted in two top-four finishes at the national level, solidifying its place among the top women’s rugby clubs in the country. Over the years, Fort Miami has remained committed to fostering a competitive environment and nurturing its players both on and off the field, ensuring that the legacy of Miami Women’s Rugby continues to thrive.
